Mara Brock Akil Career
In her early days, Mara wrote the critically acclaimed but short-lived show "South Central". In 1999 she was a writer for "The Jamie Foxx Show" while she had already written for Moesha for 4 seasons. She got immense recognition for the creation of the UPN series "Girlfriends" in 2000 and its spin-off "The Game". She was also the consultant producer and writer for the sitcom Cougar Town in 2009. She also created BET's Being Mary Jane in 2013 for which she has even won an award. In 2018 she produced a scripted superhero series called Black Lightning.

Mara is married to executive producer/director Salim Akil who is also the director of the superhero series, Black Lightning. The two supposedly met on the set of Moesha when both of them were working behind the camera. The two soon fell in love after Salim invited Mara to the concert of Wynton Marsalis. According to Mara, she was the one who asked Salim to marry her. The duo got married in April 1999 and celebrated their 23rd anniversary this year in 2022.
The two have worked on several projects together like Girlfriends and Black Lightning. They were also in the process of creating a love saga "Love Is" which according to Mara was the adaptation of their own love journey. The project, however, got canceled after a lawsuit was filed against Brock's husband Salim.

The woman claimed he assaulted her during their adulterous affair and mistreated her during their nearly ten years of the love relationship. She had also claimed that during the period of their affair she wrote a script about their relationship which Salim used for a different project supposedly "Love Is" without giving her any credit. The show got canceled after this controversy and the lawsuit is still ongoing. Salim, however, has time and often denied these allegations and said he is innocent.
Despite all the charges Salim faced, Mara is still together with her husband. She is seen sharing his photos time and often on her Instagram. There is no question of divorce between them as of now as Mara seems to trust her man regardless of all the allegations.
